How the NHL playoffs work
- 16 teams make the playoffs, eight from each conference. Standings use points: 2 for a win, 1 for an overtime or shootout loss.
- The top three teams in each division qualify, plus two wild cards per conference: the next two best teams by points, from either division.
- The division winner with more points plays the second wild card; the other division winner plays the first. The 2nd and 3rd teams in each division play each other.
- Every round is best-of-seven: First Round, Second Round, Conference Finals and the Stanley Cup Final.
Tiebreakers
Regulation wins, then regulation-plus-overtime wins, total wins, points in head-to-head games, goal differential and goals scored.
How the odds work
The odds come from playing out the rest of the season thousands of times. Each simulated game is decided by the two teams’ records so far, pulled toward average early in the season, and teams that finish level are separated with the league’s official tiebreakers.
