Privacy Policy
Race to the Playoffs (“we”, “us”) is a free, personal project run by an individual in Colorado, USA, at racetotheplayoffs.com. This page explains what we collect, why, who helps us run the site, and how you can see or delete your information. If you have questions, email support@racetotheplayoffs.com.
The short version
- You can use standings, odds and brackets without an account. We don't collect anything about you to do that.
- If you create an account, we store your email address, a username, and the brackets and groups you make.
- We don't sell your information or show ads. We count visits with privacy-friendly analytics that don't use cookies and don't identify you.
- You can delete your brackets and groups at any time, and ask us to delete your account.
What we collect
If you just browse
No account and no cookies are needed. Your browser loads sports data, team logos and fonts directly from the providers listed below, and they receive the technical details every web request includes, such as your IP address and browser type. Your browser may also remember small conveniences on your device, like which league you last viewed or whether you prefer light or dark mode.
Visit counts
We use Vercel Web Analytics to see how many people visit and which pages they use, such as a league's standings or the Schedule page. For each page view it records the page, the site that sent you (if any), your country, and your browser, operating system and device type. It doesn't use cookies, doesn't follow you to other sites, and doesn't identify you: Vercel recognizes repeat visits within a day by a scrambled code that resets every 24 hours. We only see totals. Page names leave out team, bracket and group details.
If you create an account
- Email address. Used to send you sign-in codes and links, and to contact you about your account if we need to. We don't send marketing email.
- Username. Shown to people who view your shared brackets and to members of groups you join.
- Brackets. Their names, your picks, and a copy of the playoff seeds at the time you saved them.
- Your sports (optional). The sports you choose to follow, so the top bar and Schedule page show only those on every device.
- Favorite team (optional). Used to show the site in your team's colors and open on its league. A copy is kept in your browser so the colors load instantly. Other signed-in users could see which team you picked.
- Groups. Group names, who belongs to each group, the brackets added to it, and its invite code.
- Password (if you set one). Stored only in hashed form by our sign-in provider, never readable by anyone. If you sign in with your username, our server looks up the email on your account to sign you in; your email is never shown to anyone.
- Sign-in records. Our sign-in provider keeps basic security logs, such as when you signed in and from what IP address, to protect accounts and prevent abuse.
- If you sign in with Google (when available): we receive your name, email address and profile picture from Google. We use the email address to identify your account.
To keep you signed in, a sign-in token is stored in your browser's local storage. It is not used for tracking.
Who can see what
- Saved brackets can be viewed by anyone who has the bracket's link, along with your username. Don't put personal details in a bracket name.
- Groups are visible only to their members. Members can see each other's usernames and the brackets added to the group. Anyone with a group's invite link or code can see its name, league and member count, and can join.
- Your email address is never shown to other users.
Services that help run the site
These companies process data for us only to provide their service:
- Supabase stores accounts, brackets and groups, and handles sign-in.
- Vercel hosts the site, creates the preview images for shared links, and provides the visit counts described above.
- Hostinger sends our sign-in emails and hosts our support mailbox.
- Google serves the site's fonts, and provides sign-in if you choose “Continue with Google”.
- ESPN provides the standings, schedules, results and team logos your browser loads.
- jsDelivr delivers the code library the site uses to talk to Supabase.
We may also share information if the law requires it, or to protect the site and its users from fraud or abuse.
How long we keep it
We keep your account, brackets and groups until you delete them or ask us to delete your account. Deleting a bracket or group removes it right away. Leaving a group removes you from it. Sign-in logs are kept for a limited time by our providers. Visit counts are kept by Vercel for the period its analytics plan allows, and contain nothing that identifies you.
Your choices and rights
- Edit or delete brackets from the bracket's page, and leave or delete groups from the group's page.
- Change your username from your account page.
- Delete your account or get a copy of your data by emailing support@racetotheplayoffs.com from the address you signed up with. We'll respond within 30 days.
Depending on where you live, you may have further rights, such as to correct your information or object to how it's used. Email us to use them.
Children
Race to the Playoffs is not meant for children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect information from them. If you think a child has created an account, email us and we'll delete it.
Security
Data is sent over encrypted connections, and our database rules let each person access only their own brackets and the groups they belong to. You can sign in with a password or with a one-time code sent to your email. Passwords are stored only in scrambled (hashed) form by our sign-in provider; no one, including us, can read them. Password resets go to your email, so keeping your email account secure also keeps your Race to the Playoffs account secure. No system is perfectly secure, but we work to protect your information.
Changes to this policy
The site is free and has no ads today. If that changes, for example by adding advertising, sponsorships or paid features, we'll update this policy before the change takes effect and explain any new information involved. Paid features would use a payment provider, and we would not see or store your full card details.
If we change this policy, we'll update the date at the top. If a change significantly affects how we use your information, we'll also tell you on the site or by email.
