How the NBA playoffs work
- Ten teams in each conference reach the postseason. Seeds 1–6 go straight to the first round.
- Seeds 7–10 play the Play-In Tournament: 7 hosts 8 and the winner is the 7 seed. The loser hosts the winner of 9 vs 10 for the 8 seed.
- Every playoff round is best-of-seven: First Round (1 vs 8, 2 vs 7, 3 vs 6, 4 vs 5), Conference Semifinals, Conference Finals and the NBA Finals.
- The team with the better record has home-court advantage in each series.
Tiebreakers
Between two teams: head-to-head, then winning your division, division record (if in the same division) and conference record. With three or more teams, division winners come first, then the record among the tied teams.
How the odds work
The odds come from playing out the rest of the season thousands of times. Each simulated game is decided by the two teams’ records so far, pulled toward average early in the season, and teams that finish level are separated with the league’s official tiebreakers.
